"Oh send out thy light and thy truth, let them lead me"

Pastor Steve's other legacy was to leave his congregation with 100 acres of debt-free land, an innovative design for a twenty-first century church building, and a vision of world-wide ministry emanating from the Oklahoma prairie.

The initial brief to the church's architects included these sermon points about 'Church Building' from Psalms 43:4:

1. There is needed a beacon of light and of truth. (O send out thy light and thy truth)
2. God must send it out. (O send out thy light and thy truth)
3. God will give us a pathway to follow. (let them lead me)
4. Then holiness will follow (let them bring me unto thy holy hill)
5. Then God's presence will be known (and to thy tabernacles)
6. Then service will be sanctified (then will I go unto the altar of God)
7. Then joy and its expression will be real. (unto God my exceeding joy)

"Oh send out thy light and thy truth, let them lead me"

Psalms 43:4 was the starting point for the first phase of the vision: a group of buildings transparent to the landscape, whose skylighted roofs serve as beacons of light. The complex is physically centered around the worship of God--the central, largest, building is a sanctuary whose textile-like interior roof flickers with crosses as the sun passes through the central beacon. The human-scaled wooden members composing the roof represent the church body fitly woven together, as well as the woven tabernacle carried through the wilderness by the children of Israel, and the space looks east toward a large cross set into the landscape. The innovative design, which emphasizes open and communal spaces rather than closed interiors, is by DRDH architects of London, England.

The congregation also desires to honor its servicemen who died in the service of their country in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars: Cpl Jaron Holliday and Sgt Andrew Looney. The design includes a memorial stone and pavilion set in a landscape around a lake on the front 25 acres of the property, which will be open to the public as a park. The lake will also contain a baptistry aligned with the prayer tower of the building complex.

The designs for Beacon Hill have been featured in Building Design and Architects Journal magazines and discussed across continents; a foretaste of the vision to come.
